Lieutenant to chief

UPD veteran Rodriguez in top spot

Uvalde City Council on Tuesday announced that Lt. Daniel Rodriguez has been promoted to chief of the Uvalde Police Department. Rodriguez will officially begin the chief’s duties on April 20.

The announcement comes one week after UPD chief Eric Herrera announced his resignation.

Rodriguez, a native Uvaldean, has been in law enforcement for 20 years. He has served as a patrol officer, corporal, detective, sergeant and lieutenant.

Rodriguez graduated from Sul Ross State University with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.

“First off, I want to thank God for all the blessings he has showered me and my family with. I’m so blessed to have the support of Chief Eric Herrera, Mr. Vince DiPiazza, Mayor Don McLaughlin, council and staff here at the police department,” Rodriguez said. “I want to thank all my family for supporting me and being by my side the whole way. I’m really looking forward to this new chapter in my career.”

“I have trained and groomed Lt. Daniel Rodriguez to be my successor. He has a formal four-year university degree and has attended formal managerial training in police administration,” Herrera said. “He has even temperament and commands a high level of interpersonal skills. He is a local Uvalde resident, and I feel he will do an excellent job as chief of police. It has been an honor to be the chief here, but I am glad the city manager, mayor and council selected him.”
