Little League celebrates opening day

Last Saturday was a big day for Uvalde Little League as special opening day ceremonies kicked off the start of the 2023 baseball and softball season.

Hundreds of Uvaldeans were on hand at the City of Uvalde sports complex for the activities, which included a grand march of Little League players, a special opening day ceremony, and an exhibition baseball and and exhibition softball game featuring the Houston Astros Academy team and a team made up of Uvalde Little League players.

Daryl Wade, the director of the Houston Astros Youth Academy, and Megan Hays, coordinator of the Houston Astros Youth Academy, were on hand to represent the Houston Astros organization that has contributed money to Uvalde Little League for improvements to the playing facilities, including new fences and scoreboards at Kiwanis, Ramos, and Avalos fields.

Wade threw out the first baseball of the season, while Hays threw out the first softball of the season.

Former league president J.J. Suarez served as the master of ceremonies.

Members of the league’s 2023 season officers and directors were recognized, including league president Juan Hernandez, who welcomed the crowd and thanked the Houston Astros organization for their support of Uvalde Little League.

Prior to the start of the ceremony, the American flag was raised at Kiwanis Field by members of American Legion Post 479, before Monica Vera sang the national anthem.
