Lobos place first in inaugural Belman Invitational

White finished just ahead of Vera to claim fourth place in the individual competition.

The Uvalde Lobos won top honors in the inaugural Pete Belman Invitational Cross-Country Classic held last Saturday morning at Uvalde High School.

They edged out the Devine Arabians for first place in the team standings of the varsity small girls division of the meet.

Coach Libby Gonzales’ Lobos won five of the top 10 individual placements on the way to a 36-point total.

“Our girls ran strong considering the short amount of preparation time we have had for the first meet of the season,” said Gonzales.

“This is a competitive group of girls and it will be interesting to see how they progress as the season goes on.”

Sophomores Fiona White and Monica Vera finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the individual competition.

Both were credited with a time of 14:46.20, but White was given a slight edge in their photo finish

Freshman Ytza Duron, who made her high school cross-country running debut, finished in eighth place.

Her time was 15:35.

Senior Alexis Silva placed ninth and freshman Annalia Gonzalez placed 10th.

Silva’s time was 15:39.10, while Gonzalez’s time was 15:40.70.

Michelle Hernandez, a junior, and Abby Kone, a senior, finished 11th and 13th, respectively, with times of 15:51.40 and 16:22.20.

Freshman Ytzel Gonzalez, UHS’s eighth runner in the competition, recorded a time of 16:30.70.

Devine finished second in the team standings with 40 points.

Medina Valley captured first place in the large schools division with 25 points and Del Rio placed second with 32 points.

UHS had one entrant in the junior varsity girls’ division as freshman Analeigha Najera took 27th with a time of 20:56.

Devine’s Airyanna Rodriguez was the top individual runner in the small schools division and Del Rio’s Emily Torres took first in the large schools division.

Coyotes place third

The Uvalde Coyotes claimed third place in the team standings of the boys’ junior varsity division.

They totaled 88 points to finish ahead of Crystal City with 103 points.

“Our boys are working hard,” Gonzales said. “They are young, they are a disciplined bunch. I believe they will continue to improve.”

Sophomore Joaquin Terrazas was the first UHS runner to cross the finish line.

He place 11th with a time of 21:35.70.

Taylor Massey, a sophomore, finished 17th.

His time was 23:25.60.

Junior Evan Encinia, freshman Isaul Torres, and sophomore Mauricio Alejandro placed 19th, 20th, and 21st with respective times of 23:31.90, 23:32.30, and 24:01.10.

Medina Valley won the team title with 20 points, followed by Del Rio with 42 points.

Devine topped Crystal City for first place in the boys small schools division of the meet. Devine total was 35 points, while Crystal City totaled 41 points.

Knippa sophomore Jack Collins won top individual honors in the small schools division with his time of 17:23.80.

Medina Valley won the boys’ large school division with 26 points, while Del Rio took runner-up honors with 42 points.

Del Rio’s Ely Losoya was the top individual finishers in the large schools division.
