Lobos play today in tourney


The Uvalde Lobos open play in the Southside Invitational basketball tournament today.

Coach Fortino Patiño’s Lobos, 2-1 for the season, will debut in the tourney in a 1 p.m. game against the Harlandale Indians.

At 4 p.m., the Lobos will play the Lytle Pirates.

Tomorrow at 10 a.m., they will face the Randolph Lady Ro-Hawks in their final Pool B game.

Southside tournament play will continue through Saturday with teams seeded according to their finish in pool competition.

The teams in Pool A are Southside, Memorial, Devine, and Fox Tech.

“Our goal this weekend is to play consistently good basketball and to try to compete at a high level,” said Patiño. “All of our tournament games will be against quality opponents. We need to find out where we are as a team through out play in the tournament.” 

Coach Patiño’s Lobos racked up a 55-32 road victory over the Eagle Pass Lady Eagles Tuesday night at Eagle Pass.

The Uvalde girls got off to a 27-15 lead in the first half and they blew the game open with a 20-point scoring explosion in the third period.

Gabriela Victorino and Kendra Garcia finished as the individual scoring leaders for the Lobos with 21 points and 19 points, respectively.

Others scoring for the Lobos included Danielle Garcia with four points, Desirae Garcia with three points, and Monica Vera, Cylie Cantu, Maelynn Flores, Annaly Villa each with two points.

Next home action for the Uvalde High School girls is set for Tuesday when they host the Natalia Lady Mustangs in UHS’s Rev. Harvey Kinchlow Gym. Tip-off time for the varsity game is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.

That contest will be preceded by a 10 a.m. junior varsity game.
