Lobos, Somerset vie Wednesday


The Uvalde Lobos will begin the new year with a District 28-5A home basketball matchup against the Somerset Lady Bulldogs Wednesday night in Harvey Kinchlow Gym.

Varsity action is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., while sub-varsity games are set for 5 p.m. Somerset, the pre-season pick to win district championship honors, is off to a 4-1 start in 28-5A competition this season.

The Bulldogs beat Southwest Legacy, 80-53, and Southwest High, 64-47, before losing a 55-44 decision to San Antonio Harlan in their third district contest.

They bounced back from their loss to Harlan to post district victories over Eagle Pass Winn, 66-57, and Floresville, 61-55.

The Bulldogs were to host the Southside Lady Cardinals in a key district matchup Saturday night.

Results from the Somerset-Southside contest were not available at presstime.

The Bulldogs entered play against Southside Saturday locked in a two-way tie with Harlan for second place in the District 28-5A team standings, one game behind district-leading Medina Valley and one-half game ahead of Southside.

Somerset’s top two players this season include forwards Julee Bachle, a 5-foot-7 junior, and Kendall Dominguez, a 5-foot-7 sophomore.

Bachle scored 13 points to lead Somerset in scoring against Floresville.

Dominguez had 11 points in that contest.

Coach Gisel Mireles’ Lobos, winless through their first five district games, were to play Eagle Pass Winn at Eagle Pass Saturday afternoon.

Results from that contest were not available at presstime. Those results will be reported in an upcoming edition of the Uvalde Leader-News.

The Lobos went into the Winn game coming off a 58-32 loss to the San Antonio Harlan Hawks.

Ahead 13-10, the Harlan girls closed out the final two minutes of the first period with a 6-2 scoring run.

The Hawks outscored the Lobos, 12-6, in the second period to extend their half-time lead to 31-18.

They upped their lead to 43-27 by the end of the third period and outpointed the UHS girls, 16-5, in the final period to finish with their 26-point victory margin.

Vivian Villa led Harlan with 16 points.

Hannah Gallegos and Jenay Henry also scored in double figures with 14 points and 11 points, respectively.

Alyssa Rodriguez, who scored nine of Uvalde’s first 12 points in the game, finished with 16 points to lead the Lobos.

Others scoring were A’Taisha Carroll and Nataly Santos each with five points, and Rayleigh Watson, Aliyah Carrizalez, and Sarrah Luna each with two points.

Prior to their loss to Harlan, the Lobos lost a 55-40 decision against the Southwest Dragons.

The Uvalde girls battled the Dragons to a 28-20 deficit in the first half, but the Southwest girls outscored the Uvaldeans, 27-20, in the second half to wind up with their 15-point margin of victory.

Alyssa Rodriguez connected on five three-point field goals and ended up with 22 points to lead scoring for the Lobos

The others who contributed to Uvalde’s scoring ledger were Aliyah Carrizalez, A’Taisha Carroll, and Nataly Santos each with four points, and Rayleigh Watson, Shyann Dockal, and Klarissa Sonora each with two points.

Felicity Aguilar netted 17 points to top the scoring for Southwest.

Following action Wednesday, the Lobos will be on the road Saturday for a district contest against the Floresville Jaguars. The varsity game is set for a 6:30 p.m. tipoff, while the sub-varsity games will begin at 5 p.m.

On Jan. 8, the Lobos will begin the second half of their district schedule when they face the Southside Lady Cardinals.
