Luna wins first place in photo contest

Uvalde Leader-News general manager Pete Luna won first place in the features category of the National Newspaper Association Publishers’ Auxiliary fourth-quarter photography contest.

The award was announced Tuesday in the October 2021 edition of PubAux.

The winning photo was taken during the Sabinal Lions Club Wild Hog Fest, which was staged in late March. It shows young visitor Elliot Morris, who prefers the name Tex Weaver, shaking the hand of Sabinal Police Department reserve officer Ray Przybylski.

Luna, who has worked at the Leader-News since June 4, 2006, has won the South Texas Press Association photographer of the year award three times in addition to receiving numerous other photography awards from the STPA and Texas Press Association.

This is his third PubAux award. He won first place in sports photography for the third and fourth quarters of 2020.

The contest encompassed photos taken between Sept. 11, 2020, and Sept. 11, 2021.
