The public is invited to join Main Street Uvalde at the organization’s third-annual “Honors and Hors d’oeuvres” mixer and awards presentation on Thursday night at Broadway 830. Seven awards are set to be presented, including the Up and Coming Business award; the Heart of Downtown award; the Unsung Hero award; the Alliance award; the Cornerstone award; and the Shining Star award. Main Street manager Susan Rios said a new award for preservation will be presented this year.

“The Preservation Award is for outstanding restoration, rehabilitation or preservation work to a Main Street district building,” Rios said.

“We looked at projects that have been done within the last three years approximately, since this is the first time we are extending the honor and with COVID-19, we needed to extend the project time frame. Plus, restoration projects typically happen over many months if not years.”

Rios said the Main Street Advisory Board meets, reviews the award categories and selects qualifying nominees for each award category.

They then discuss each award and vote on which honorees are chosen

Rios said it often takes several meetings to make the final selection. In 2020, Main Street hosted its first annual “Honors and Hors d’oeuvres” award presentation event, held virtually to laud community partners. Rios hosted the second-annual event on April 29, 2021, at the downtown plaza square, which also celebrated the 10th anniversary of Main Street Uvalde.

“The Main Street program firmly believes that public recognition is vital. This doesn’t only apply when we are talking about businesses, it also rings true for the people  – staff, volunteers, and the community stakeholders. Effective programs recognize people as the greatest asset for success. Valuing people and businesses is essential for building trust, confidence, and ultimately, positive and active engagement in revitalization efforts.”

Hors d’oeuvres and cocktails will be served on the restaurant patio, 100 E. Main St., from 5-6:30 p.m.  The awards ceremony is set to begin at 6 p.m. Anyone interested in attending is asked to RSVP via email to mainstreet@visituvalde.com.
