Manuel A. Talavera

Manuel Alfonso Talavera, 90, of Uvalde died on Aug. 3, 2018, at the VITAS Hospice Unit in San Antonio.

He was born on Feb. 28, 1928, at Arroyo Del Blanco Ranch in Sabinal to Felicitas (Arizmendi) and Carlos Talavera Sr.

He was the second of six children born to the couple. He attended

elementary school in Knippa and the West Main School in Uvalde.

He met his future wife, Refugia “Cuca” Uriegas, in the 1940s at the old Ritz Theater on West Main Street. After a year-long courtship, they married on Dec. 18, 1949, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Talavera worked as a truck driver and grocery warehouse clerk for Labatt Food Service of San Antonio. In 1970 he began work for Gaztke Farms in Wisconsin, followed by employment with Godfrey Foods in Waukesha, Wisconsin. He retired from Godfrey Foods in 1993, and in 1994 he returned to Uvalde.

The family says he was  a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where he served as a Eucharistic minister, lector and music minister. Among his interests were music, fishing, watching sports on television and serving his parish community.

Talavera is survived by his wife of 68 years, of Uvalde; three daughters, Christine T. Tabares of

West Bend, Wisconsin, Rosario T. Compean of San Antonio and Cecilia T. Martinez and husband, George E., of Uvalde; four sons, Homero Alfonso Talavera and wife, Maria Elena, and Julian Talavera, all of San Antonio, Edward Talavera of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, and James D. Talavera of
