Maria Eloisa Zavala, 90, of Uvalde died on Jan. 15. 2024, at her daughter’s residence in San Antonio with her family by her side.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on March 15 at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A reception will follow at the Uvalde County Fairplex at 12:30 p.m. She will be interred beside her husband at Fort Sam National Cemetery in San Antonio on March 18 at 2:15 p.m.

She was born on Sept. 23, 1933, in Knippa to Tomasa (Vela) and Severanio Gomez.

She married Juan (Johnny) Zavala in 1959 in Crystal City and together they raised their three children in Uvalde after his retirement from the United States Army in 1971.

Her family said her life was a testament to love, devotion, and adventure. They said she was not only a devoted wife but also a loving daughter, sister, aunt, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.

They said her nurturing spirit extended beyond her immediate family, making everyone feel like a lifelong friend.

Her family remembers her passion for gardening, music, singing and playing guitar. They said during her final months, she enjoyed karaoke, attending music concerts and enjoyed watching her beloved Spurs basketball games.

Her family said that her dedication to her community was evident through her work at the Uvalde school district, her involvement in local elections, working at Amistad Nursing and Rehabilitation Center as a caregiver, and her participation with the Mexican choir, Guadalupaños and Cursillistas at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

They said despite her origins she journeyed to various destinations that included exploring the pyramids in Egypt to witnessing Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world.

In her later years, her family remembers that she expressed a desire to visit Spain, showing that her sense of adventure remained undiminished.

They said she will be remembered not only for her adventurous soul, but also for her selflessness, generosity, and unwavering love for her family, friends, and community.

She is survived by three daughters, Yovanca Coronado, and husband T.C., of San Angelo; Sonya Zavala-LeDoux of Houston; and Sandra Z. Rios and husband, Tony, of San Antonio; along with her grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
