The first-annual Makenna Elrod Seiler Memorial Roping and Scholarship Presentation, a two-day event which includes a barbecue cook-off and dance, is slated April 14-15 at the Uvalde County Fairplex.

Other activities include a corn hole tournament, kids dummy roping and a silent auction.

Dickie Kaiser and Brushy Creek will provide live music during a dance set April 15 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Admission is free.

The barbecue cook off, with a $5,000 guarantee payout, is set April 15 and is sanctioned by Champion Barbecue Alliance.

The event is being held in honor of Makenna, who died as a result of the May 24 tragedy at Robb Elementary. She is known for her love of animals, dancing, and butterflies. The Texas 4-H foundation has also established a scholarship in her honor.

All proceeds and donations from this event will fund the Makenna Elrod Seiler Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides scholarships to Uvalde County students. Alcohol sales during the dance will benefit Flights to Furever, a non-profit Uvalde based animal rescue organization.

Event organizer Chris Seiler, Makenna’s father, said a $10,000 scholarship will be presented during the event. He said the group passed out applications to all Uvalde County schools in January, and the final selection was planned for March 15.

Seiler said they plan to hold this event every year, and hope to continue to provide scholarships to Uvalde County high school seniors.

Seiler said they have received an outpouring of support and are expecting a good turnout for the event. He said those interested in signing up for a specific event should reach out to that activity’s coordinator.
