Set to adorn the pews of First United Methodist Church on Oct. 4-5, the Sanctuary Quilts exhibit will feature a display of vibrant colors, intricate patterns and mesmerizing craftsmanship.

“This exhibit will truly be a feast for the eyes,” said Kay Brieden, coordinator for the event.

The display is a compilation of new and vintage quilts, some contemporary while others pre-date the 1908 sanctuary.

“There will be all sizes and patterns of quilts, hand-pieced and quilted as well as machine-pieced and quilted,” said Brieden.

The oldest quilt in the exhibit is dated 1880, belonging to Les and Kay Brieden.

“We have a quilt that my husband’s great-grandmother completed when his grandmother was born,” she said. “It is a red and white Irish chain that was hand pieced. An outline of the baby’s footprints and the date are embroidered in one corner.”

There is no admission fee to view the exhibit, but the group is accepting donations.

“Monetary gifts as well as donations of cotton fabric, quilt batting, and cotton thread will be collected and given to Quilts of Grace,” say Brieden.

Quilts of Grace is a project born from the Herby Ham Activity Center. It benefits children and teens who have experienced traumatic situations.

The group meets weekly on Mondays at the Herby Ham Activity Center to press fabric, cut fabric, and sew quilt tops. The quilts are distributed through the Bluebonnet Children’s Advocacy Center.

The group will be celebrating its one-year anniversary on Sept. 9 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Herby Ham Activity Center. The event will feature light refreshments and a slideshow of pictures from the year.

To date, they have completed and donated over 250 quilts. Volunteers provide all of the labor but rely on donations for the supplies needed.
