Uvalde native Pedro Navarro earned the first Uvalde Area Retired Teachers Association scholarship at Sul Ross Rio Grande College, where association representatives were on hand last week to congratulate him.

Nancy Stockton, co-president of the association, and Dick Whipple, who served on the association’s scholarship committee, said they use member dues to fund the scholarship that is awarded to an RGC teacher education student.

Known for their active volunteerism, the members in Uvalde have contributed over 75,000 volunteer hours in the past year. The association boasts 150 members and includes not only retired and active teachers, but also aides and staff.

Navarro completed a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in December and graduated magna cum laude, meaning he maintained a grade point average between 3.70-3.89 based on 4.0 scale during his undergraduate career.

He is now teaching Algebra I to eighth-graders at Morales Junior High School. The first-year teacher said he enjoys the supportive working environment at Morales and appreciates the encouragement of more experienced teachers as well as administrators and staff.

He has begun work on a master’s degree at RGC, and part of his small amount of spare time is spent serving as president of the RGC Student Government Association.

The scholarship allowed Navarro to pay for his graduate classes this semester without having to borrow money.
