No pass, no play no problem for some

It’s good grades and more play for Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Navy Junior Reserve Training Corps and cheerleading students, the only two cohorts of extracurriculars that were not affected by the state’s No Pass, No Play rule.

All 128 students in the two programs received passing grades during the first quarter of the 2021 school year.

UCISD athletics, Hi-Steppers, and band students were not as successful, UCISD assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction Michael Rodriguez reported Monday during the district board meeting. In total, there are 731 students participating in the above referenced extracurricular activities at UCISD, of which 120 are benched until their academic performance improves.

The UHS band, under the leadership of interim band director Abel Granados, includes 91 eighth-through 12th-graders, of which 19 did not receive passing grades. Measures taken to improve academic performance for band students include faculty tutorials, peer tutoring, and grade monitoring.

The district’s athletic programs, under the direction of athletic director Wade Miller, had varying results.

Morales Junior High School athletics, including tennis, football, volleyball and cross-country, has 232 seventh- and eighth-graders in the program, of which 59 students were affected by No Pass, No Play.

For high school athletics, which also includes swimming, there are 262 student athletes, of which 39 were sidelined.

“I think junior high football and tennis are the ones we need to hit on the hardest,” Miller told the board, while explaining he did an in-depth analysis of academic performance by teams.

“There is still over 70-percent passing rate, so I was really pleased. A, with the numbers, and B, the percentage of kids that are doing their work in the classroom.”

No Pass, No Play in Texas was enacted during the 68th legislative session in 1984. Under the law, a student who receives a grade below 70 in any class may not participate in extracurricular activities for three school weeks, but may practice or rehearse, per the University Interscholastic League.
