The Open Range Bakery and Cafe, 2211 E Main St., has been chosen as the September 2020 business of the month by the Uvalde Area Chamber of Commerce.

The business, owned and largely operated by the Esau family, opened in August of 2019 and offers a variety of lunch options, coffee, baked goods and frozen take-home casserole options. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, and from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday when they offer a breakfast menu. They are closed on Sunday and Monday.

In an effort to help those affected by Hurricane Laura, a group of men from the Uvalde Mennonite Church left Thursday, Sept. 3 to travel to affected areas in DeRidder, Louisiana, to assist with clean up efforts. The ladies who operate Open Range, along with others, provided breakfast food sent with the men for cleanup crews, including eight dozen Apple Bran muffins.

Co-owner Jenny Esau said in June the business resumed dine-in options, with some tables blocked off to implement social distancing.

The bakery sells whole pies by arrangement with advance notice for approximately $15 plus tax, as well as pie and cake by the slice, muffins, cookies, and cinnamon and caramel pecan rolls.

Sample platters of cookies, scones and rolls that serve 20 people are being sold for about $36 plus tax and may be ordered with at least two days of advance notice.

They offer curbside pickup and take out options for their full menu, as well as frozen ready-made meal selections.
