Pete Belman Invitational set Saturday

Pete Belman holds up the first-place medal he received for finishing first in state. The medal was presented to him as the top individual finisher of the 1999 Class 4A cross-country race held at Round Rock.

The inaugural Pete Belman Invitational Cross-Country Classic will be conducted Saturday at the Uvalde High School practice complex.

Competition will begin with the girls’ varsity race at 8 a.m.

The boys’ varsity race is scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. start.

Starting times for the other divisions of the meet will include: junior varsity girls, 9 a.m.; JV boys, 9:30 a.m.; junior high girls, 10 a.m.; and junior high boys, 10:30 a.m.

Joining Uvalde runners for the cross-country meet will be girls and boys representing Brackett, Carrizo Springs, Crystal City, Del Rio, Devine, Dilley, Eagle Pass Winn, Knippa, and Medina Valley.

“With have a strong field of teams entered,” said UHS head cross-country coach Libby Gonzales. “This should be a tough first meet of the season.”

Those representing UHS in the girls’ varsity division of the meet will include Ytza Duron, Ytzel Duron, Lia Gonzales, Monica Vera, Desiree Vera, Abby Kone, Lex Silva, Fiona White, Michelle Hernandez, and Valeria Perez.

The UHS runners entered in the boys’ junior varsity division will include Taylor Massey, Koben Sanchez, Joaquin Terrazas, Mauricio Alejandro, and Evan Encinia. Formerly known as the UHS Invitational, the meet has been renamed to honor Pete Belman, the only UHS athlete to ever run as part of a state cross-country championship team and to claim individual state cross-country honors.
