Rep. King speaks to retired teachers


The following information was submitted by Nancy Stockton on behalf of the Uvalde Area Retired Teachers Association.

The Uvalde Area Retired Teachers Association held its October meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 22. President Bill Kolinek called the meeting to order before welcoming members and guests. The invocation was given by Jeanne Hart. Master Sergeant Calvin Lambert and Sharon Fowler led the pledges to the American flag and the Texas flag.

Before the business meeting everyone chose their meal from many covered dishes the members provided. Desserts were brought by this meeting’s hostesses, Sulema Bermea, Karen Baen, Oralia Barker, Mary Fowler, Betty Hayden, Dee Ann Raley, Laura and Dick Whipple and Shirley Zimmerman.

The first order of business was the minutes, which the executive board had approved. B. J. Cooper mentioned that they were on a table and had been emailed to members. Kay Welch gave the treasurer’s report.

Under standing committee reports, Eunice Sosa, health care chairman, reminded all that this was Breast Cancer Awareness month and that not only women but men needed to get their mammograms. Getting their flu shots before the end of October was also encouraged. Molly Turner reported on the book project and Nancy Stockton reminded members that any book given to a Texas child will be counted on the report. A count will be taken at the December meeting.

Before the program, president Kolinek presented large jars of Uvalde honey to guests Suann Agold, Richard Herbst, and Tracy King. A book on the history of Texas, “The Big Wonderful Thing” by Stephen Harrigan will be given to El Progreso Library in honor of Representative King in appreciation for his work to benefit Texas teachers.

Suann Agold, President of District 20 of the Texas Retired Teachers, focused on the importance of recruiting members. She also explained that after the state convention in Corpus Christi this April, the organization will only meet every other year in Austin.

Richard Herbst, Legislative Chairman for District 20, spoke on the 13th check members received and on the money in TRS Care.

In closing the meeting, president Kolinek announced that the next meeting would be on Dec. 10 at 6 p.m. at the Herby Ham Activity Center.

A catered meal for $15 will be served and Toni Hull will provide music. Hostesses will be Barbara Burell, Sandra Hopper, Sandy Chisum, Sammye Smallwood, Carolyn Bevis, Yolanda Flores, Maria Gonzales, Sherry Laffere and Debbie Trees.
