Slain teacher’s husband resigns from school district PD

School police officer Ruben Ruiz, whose wife, fourth-grade teacher Eva Mireles died as a result of the fatal mass shooting at Robb Elementary, has resigned from the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District’s police force.

Anne Marie Espinoza, executive director of marketing and communications for Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District confirmed the resignation Thursday but did not have the effective date.

The newspaper requested information on the status of Ruiz’s employment on Sept. 15 and Nov. 10.

On May 24, Ruiz entered Robb Elementary school at 11:48 a.m. and stated his wife, teacher Eva Mireles, said she had been shot. Ruiz was later removed from the building.

Ruiz worked for the Uvalde Police Department from 2007, upon graduating from the Middle Rio Grande Law Enforcement Academy, until 2018 when he joined the UCISD police department. During his time with UPD, he held positions as a patrol officer, school resource officer, and detective.

Ruiz holds certifications in basic and advanced SWAT, police explorer, and school resource officer. He is a Uvalde High School class of 1997 graduate. 

Ruiz worked for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice from 2000 to 2007.
