Three FFA teams heading to state

Three groups of students from the Uvalde High School FFA department will vie in state competition next week, including the entomology, cotton judging, and barbecue teams.

Yesterday, the meat evaluation and technology team competed at Texas A &M University in College Station hoping to earning a spot in state competition.

Results from the event will be published in a future edition of the Uvalde Leader-News.

The UHS cotton judging team, comprising six students, including seniors Adam Andres, Shelby Colvin, and Enrique Morales; junior James “Tres” Colvin; sophomore Trevor Black; and freshmen Landon Klein and Caden Smith, will compete at Angelo State University on April 22-23.

During the Taylor-Katy Invitational held April 9, the team placed second. That placement earned them a spot at state competition.

Entomology

Following a fourth-place win April 15 at the Area VII contest in Fredericksburg, the UHS entomology team qualified for state competition set April 24 at Texas Tech University.

The entomology team includes senior Shelby Colvin, junior Caitlin Ledesma, sophomore  Reagan Dodson, and freshmen Elizabeth Phillips and Hope Dube.

Smokin’ Yotes

The Smokin’ Yotes barbecue team will compete in the High School BBQ state championship April 23-24 in Llano.

This year’s team comprises four members, UHS juniors Parker Haby, Dylan Sieckenius and Rylan Keeney, and sophomore Trevor Black.

The team qualified for state competition in December, following a first-place win at the regional contest held at Uvalde High School.

The team is under the leadership of coach, mentor, and UHS assistant principal Joel Barbosa, and advised by Uvalde FFA instructor Charlie Black.

The program is an extension of FFA and culinary arts.
