Special Olympics team to showcase abilities with law enforcement pairing

The Law Enforcement Torch Run celebrating the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Special Olympics team is scheduled Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

The run will begin at downtown plaza and will end at the Uvalde Honey Bowl. Once the torch arrives at the Honey Bowl, the athletes will showcase abilities in a relay race with UCISD law enforcement.

Several branches of law enforcement have been invited to participate.

The UCISD Special Olympics team is composed of nine students including fifth-graders Jessica Burns and Isaiah Posada; sixth-graders Johnny Gonzalez, Jacob Mirelez and Blake Robin; eighth-grader Lluvia Quiroga; and ninth-graders Christopher Garcia, Sky Moreno and Adrian Leija.

The team will be competing in the Special Olympics spring games in Converse, near San Antonio, on April 13.

They will be leaving for competition on Friday, April 12.

UCISD Superintendent Hal Harrell said that a police escort will commence at 2 p.m. from Flores Elementary School. Harrell requested that teachers allow students to go outside to cheer the athletes on as they leave.

The spring games will take place at the D. W. Rutledge Stadium in Converse at 8:30 a.m.

There is no charge to attend the games, and Harrell said that the community is welcome to attend.
