Two seats open on Sabinal City Council

How to proceed with filling two open alderman spots in Ward I and Ward II is on the agenda when the Sabinal City Council meets on March 13 at 7 p.m. at city hall.

On Monday, Feb. 21, the Sabinal City Council voted to change the polling place for the May 6 election to Sabinal Elementary School.

The Feb. 17 candidate filing deadline passed with no one signing up, so council members are expected to discuss canceling the May 6 municipal election, and possibly holding a special election.

Ward I Alderman Ricky Davis Rodriguez, 68, died on Feb. 27 this year, and it is possible council members may appoint someone to fill the remainder of his term.

Rodriguez was on the Sabinal Independent School board from May of 2001 to May of 2007.

He spent more than 40 years as an educator, including teaching in Uvalde, at Sabinal Independent School District  and serving as special education director at Devine Independent School District

He was unopposed for the Ward I city council seat in 2019.

In Ward II, Shelly Boyd did not re-file as a candidate for her seat. Boyd was appointed to the office in 2019 to fulfill the year left on Javier Flores’ term after he moved away. Boyd was subsequently elected to the seat.

Sabinal has six council seats, two each from three wards which rotate coming up for election in two-year cycles, plus the city mayor.

No municipal election was held in 2022, as no one challenged incumbents including Mayor Charles Story, and council members in Ward 1, held by Aniceto Alejandro; Ward 2, held by Billie Franklin; and Ward 3, held by Lupita De Leon.

In Ward 3, Stephen Henry filed for reelection unopposed, and so will continue to hold the spot.

Council meetings are typically held on the second and fourth Monday of the month at Sabinal City Hall.
