Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District named Morales Junior High honors science teacher Alicia Bradley as the district’s Secondary Teacher of the Year, Robb Elementary third-grade teacher Griselda Flores as Elementary Teacher of the Year, and transportation department employee Annette Briseño as 2020-21 Bus Driver of the Year.

Bradley, who will serve the district as a gifted and talented teacher next year, has been teaching at UCISD for four years, while Flores is a 25-year veteran of the district.

“Annette exemplifies the attributes that garnered her this award; excelling in leadership, attitude perseverance, technical skills and relationships with students and parents,” reads a social media post announcing the transportation award.

The announcements came Monday during district’s regular board meeting, during which trustees also approved roofing repairs for several campuses, a budget amendment, and superintendent performance goals.

Beth Reavis, assistant superintendent of human resources for UCISD, gave a presentation on the district’s $16.169 million Elementary and Secondary Schools Emergency Relief Funding grant. Following her presentation, the board approved a resolution granting the district authority to apply for the grant funding from Texas Education Agency.

Roofing Repairs

In their action, the board approved contracting with Tremco Roofing Company for roof repairs at Anthon Elementary, Flores Elementary, Benson Educational Complex, Morales Junior High and Uvalde High School for a total of $748,826.

With the increase in the price of lumber due to shortages expected in the next few weeks, UCISD Superintendent Hal Harrell said the district was saving money with this approval.

“In working through these bid submissions, material prices are fairly certain for the short term, but all indications are prices will increase substantially in the next few weeks and could increase the total project by $100,000,” Harrell said.

Superintendent Goals

According to UCISD officials, a board workshop was held in March to discuss and determine the superintendent goals based on the vision of the board.

These goals, as approved, include creating a long-term facility improvement and construction plan, and pursuing approval of a bond that would enable the construction of new schools, address campus needs and improve facilities. Other goals include creating a teacher recruitment and retention plan that supports the instructional needs and growth of each campus and the district.

Detection Canines

The district will continue to use Interquest Detection Canines for contraband searches. The company makes unannounced visits with canines to inspect secondary campuses, student vehicles, and lockers for contraband. The cost per visit for the 2021-21 school year is $290 per visit with 18 visits scheduled, for a total of $5,220.

During the 2020-21 school year, the company visited several campuses, detecting prescription medication, gunpowder, ammunition, and hunting knives.

Following their regular meeting, the board met in closed session to review personnel assignments and resignations.

Trustee Javier Flores was not present for the meeting.
