UHS girls host Somerset in Saturday afternoon soccer


Heading into the stretch run of the District 28-5A girls’ soccer race, the Uvalde Lobos need only a few more wins to clinch a post-season playoff spot.

Coach Keith Pendleton’s Lobos, 6-2-3 in district and 8-7-4 for the season, will be on the road Tuesday night to play the Eagle Pass Winn Lady Mavericks.

Kick-off time for the varsity match is set for 6:30 p.m., while the junior varsity teams will play beginning at 5 p.m.

The Lobos will go into the Winn contest coming off a Friday night matchup against the district-leading San Antonio Harlan Lady Hawks.

Results from the Uvalde-Harlan match were not available.

Going into district action Friday, Harlan was in first place in the 28-5A girls’ soccer standings and Medina Valley was in second place.

The Lobos held a slight lead over Southwest in the battle for third place.

Last Tuesday night, the Lobos battled the Southwest Lady Dragons to a 2-2 tie in action at Southwest.

Esmy-Angelee Garcia scored both Uvalde goals.

She was assisted on one goal by Jesslynn Vara.

The Lobos will be at home next Saturday for afternoon competition against the Somerset Lady Bulldogs.

The varsity match is set for a 12:30 p.m. start, while the junior varsity teams will play at 11 a.m.

Earlier this season, the Somerset girls recorded a 2-2 tie against the Lobos in action at Somerset.

Before their tie against Southwest, the Lobos recorded a 6-1 win over the Southwest Legacy Lady Titans on Feb. 21.

The Lobos scored three times in the first half and three times in the second half.

Esmy-Angelee Garcia, Arissa Perez, and Tabitha White each scored for the Lobos in the first half.

Alexandria Nolasco scored the first Uvalde goal in the second half, while Arissa Perez scored the other two goals.

Down 6-0, the Legacy girls averted a shutout as they scored with 22:55 left in the game.

Besides her three goals, Arissa Perez also had two assists, and Esmy-Angelee Garcia and Shelby Colvin each had one assist.

Defensive standouts for the Lobos included Jeslynn Vara, Briana Crow, Jaqueline Cardenas, and Lexi Silva.

Rayleigh Watson was Uvalde’s goalkeeper for the contest.
