UHS joins tough football district


Just how tough is Uvalde High School’s new football district?

Four of the new high schools in UHS’s district advanced to the playoffs last football season.

The Kerrville Tivy Antlers finished second in the District 26-5A race.

Their lone district loss came against the 26-5A champion Dripping Springs Tigers.

The Antlers beat Austin Crockett and Victoria West in post-season play, before losing to the Corpus Christi Calallen Wildcats, 31-24, in the third round of the Class 5A Division II playoffs.

Boerne Champion, Medina Valley, and Alamo Heights all finished with 4-3 district records in District 26-5A competition.

Using a positive-points tie-breaker, Champion and MV advanced to the postseason playoffs.

Champion defeated Heights by 10 points.

MV bested Champion by seven points, while Heights edged MV by one point.

Champion’s Chargers bested Austin SFA in bi-district play, but then lost to Angleton, 69-7, in the second round of Class 5A Division I play.

Angleton advanced to the state semifinals before losing to Manvel.

In the bi-district round of Class 5A Division II action, District 25-5A champion Austin McCallum posted a 37-14 victory over the Medina Valley Panthers.

The San Antonio Memorial Minutemen made school history last season as they became the first Memorial team to win district football honors in the 52-year history of the school.

The Minutemen captured the District 28-5A football championship.

Memorial’s lone district loss last season came in a 26-13 setback at the hands of the San Houston Hurricanes, who finished second in the district because of losses to Edison and Brackenridge.

The Minutemen lost a 45-17 bi-district decision against the Victoria West Warriors.

Lockhart’s Lions won only one District 26-5A football game in 2018.

The Lions beat Marble Falls in a 28-24 thriller.

Though the Lions won only one district game, they played well in losses against Medina Valley, 14-7, and Alamo Heights, 28-21.

They lost a 31-27 decision against Seguin.

The Lions were narrowly defeated 21-18 in pre-district action against Victoria West.

San Antonio Kennedy went winless in District 28-5A play and finished 0-10 for the season.

The Rockets lost a 36-14 pre-district verdict against the Uvalde Coyotes, who finished third in the District 29-5A race, before losing to Calallen, 56-21, in bi-district competition.

In other bi-district matchups, District 29-5A champion Southside lost to Flour Bluff, 28-2, in bi-district, district runner-up Floresville lost to Alice, 44-25, while Eagle Pass Winn suffered a 35-0 loss to Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial.
