UHS runner Gonzalez places 32nd in state meet

Athletes from multiple area schools compete

Uvalde High School senior Unberto “Tito” Gonzalez placed 32nd out of the field of 123 boys who competed in the Class 4A state cross-country race last Tuesday at Round Rock.

Gonzalez completed the hilly course at Old Settlers Park in a time of 16 minutes and 47.56.

“It was a tough, hilly running course,” said Libby Guzman, head cross-country coach at Uvalde High School. “He finished in 32nd place overall among a really strong field of runners. I was proud of his performance.”

For Gonzalez, the state meet culminated a successful season of cross-country running.

Gonzalez placed second in the district meet and finished ninth in regional running competition.

“Tito had a terrific season,” Guzman said. “Besides running some great races, he provided senior leadership for our high school team.”

Other state results

In Class 1A state cross-country action last Monday, the Knippa High School boys placed seventh in the team standings with 175 points.

Christian Rattler was the 18th runner to cross the finish line. His time was 17:16.30.

Others running the race were: Jack Collins, 53rd place, 18:20.05; Matthew Santos, 72nd place, 18:48.62; Ryan Santos, 84th place, 19:12.96; Caleb Packer, 89th place, 19:24.96; Jaden Rattler, 91st place, 19:30.52; and Ernesto Garza, 110th place, 21:22.03.

Nueces Canyon’s Justin Aguirre finished 30th in the race with his time of 17:40.38.

As a team, the Nueces Canyon girls placed ninth with 237 team points.

Camdyn Childs was the 42nd individual to finish the race. Her time was 13:52.66.

Canyon’s other runners were Roseanna Schwab, 65th, 14:15.94; Jayci Karnes, 94th, 14:54.11; Layne Hicks, 103rd, 15:20.15; Kylie Taylor, 104th, 15:20.17; and Katy Karnes, 121st, 19:38.

Utopia’s Cherish Dunlap finished in 26th place with her time of 13:29.54.
