UHS seniors earn college scholarships

Carol Brewer

Students in Uvalde High School’s class of 2022 have earned a combined $2.732 million in scholarships at minimum, Carol Brewer, College, Career, and Military Readiness coordinator at UHS, told the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District’s board of trustees.

“These are self-reported, so the students report this to me. They come and show me their award letters or when they earn a scholarship they bring that to me,” Brewer said on May 16.

She said this year’s total includes scholarships from fewer than 50 students – only those who reported their earnings to her. The UHS class of 2021 reported $2.5 million in scholarships.

Brewer also said that, this year, she has recorded approximately $84,000 in local scholarships given to UHS students.

“That’s a low number because there are some that are still awarding, and I get very little of what happens at the livestock show,” she said.

She said she aims to give accolades to those local donors.

“That where my heart really bursts. Those are people taking care of our kids,” she said.

Throughout the school year, Brewer said she advertises scholarship opportunities to students several ways, through newsletters and by posting information on her office door.

Scholarship opportunities also come through the universities.

Graduation for the class of 2022 was held Friday, June 24 at the Uvalde Honey Bowl.
