Uvalde High School’s spring sports, including baseball, softball, golf, tennis, and track-and-field, are done.

Last Friday, the University Interscholastic League announced that the suspension of activities will encompass the remainder of the school year.

On March 16, the UIL suspended play because of the COVID-19 health threat. The UIL’s decision to cancel the remainder of the spring sports season followed Governor Greg Abbott’s announcement Texas schools are to remain closed for in-person classes for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year.

“First, I would like to show my appreciation to the UIL. They did a phenomenal job of keeping the best interests of our students, and holding out as long as they could along with exploring every avenue they possibly could to complete the spring athletic season,” said UHS athletic director R.T. Gonzales.

“With that being said, I can’t express enough how sorry I am for all our spring teams. These athletes, especially our seniors, who did not complete their season,” said Gonzales. “The seniors have been pioneers for this athletic program and have represented the Uvalde brand at the highest level. They have embraced the changes we brought when we first arrived. I can’t thank them enough for their commitment.

“Nothing can be said to make this right or to make this go away, but my coaches and I are extremely proud of our seniors and the rest of our athletes and for what they accomplished this spring.

“Our seniors helped to establish a high standard. They have put us in a position for future success. We look to our underclassmen who return next season to continue what these seniors have helped to start,” said Gonzales.

When the UIL’s suspension of activities went into effect on March 16, UHS athletes, in all of the spring sports, were enjoying a great season.

UHS had several athletes ready to compete in state powerlifting competition.

The UHS girls soccer team was playoff bound.

In baseball, the Coyotes were tied for first place in the District 28-5A standings, while the Lobos were in position to vie for a post-season playoff spot.

UHS tennis, golf, and track-and-field athletes were preparing for district competition.

Those Coyotes and the Lobos looked to fare well in district play and several of those athletes were in position to advance past the district level.

With the end of the 2019-20 high school sports season, the attention turns to the start of the new school year.

“Now, we shift our focus and find a way to prepare for the fall with the given circumstances,” said Coach Gonzales.

Practice for the fall sports, including football, volleyball, team tennis, and cross-country running is scheduled to begin in early August. But the start of fall sports practices and the beginning of the 2020-21 school year are tentative at this point because of the coronavirus pandemic.

That match was the last match played by the Lobos because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
