UHS tennis players begin fall competition


Next Friday and Saturday, the Uvalde High School tennis team will be at San Antonio for team tennis tournament action hosted by the Northside Independent School District.

Last Friday, Coach Terri Rambie’s Uvaldeans were to face dual-team action against the East Central Hornets and the San Marcos Rattlers at East Central.

Results from those two matches at San Antonio will be reported in next Thursday’s edition of the Uvalde Leader-News.

The Coyotes and Lobos entered play Friday sporting a 3-1 season record.

Last Thursday, they split a pair of dual-team matches.

In the morning, Laredo Nixon edged the Coyotes and Lobos in a 10-9 thriller.

They bounced back to best the San Antonio Madison Mavericks, 11-8, in afternoon action.

UHS won a pair of dual-team matches played last Wednesday.

The Uvaldeans downed the Converse Judson Rockets, 16-3, in morning action and then bested the San Antonio Memorial Minutemen, 17-2, in afternoon action.

Against Judson, the Coyotes swept all three doubles matches and all six singles matches.

The Lobos topped the Rockets in two of three doubles matches and four of six singles matches.

UHS won the mixed doubles match.

Doubles winners for the Coyotes were the teams of Jeffrey Hopper and Jacob Sendejo, Miguel Morales and Bryson Catlett, and Andrew Melchor and Beau Gonzales.

Singles winners included Matt Fernandez, Hopper, Melchor, Sendejo, Gonzales, and Lorenzo Perez.

Ryann Stidham and Natalie Coleman rallied to post a 2-6, 6-1, and 10-7 split set win in girls’ number-two doubles.

Gabi Rodriguez and Brenda Garcia won the number-three match.

Bailey Wimberly battled back from a loss in her first set in girls’ number-two singles to win a 6-7, 6-3, 10-8 decision.

Other singles winners for the Lobos were Danielle Rodriguez, Coleman, and Karissa Rangel.

In additional matches played, the doubles teams of Gio Valdez and Lorenzo Perez, and Michael and Francisco Guerra won, while Miguel Morales, Bryson Catlett, Valdez, Francisco Guerra and Kayla Balbuena won in singles.

Against Memorial, Nina Gomez and Kayla Balbuena won in split sets in singles. Other Lobos winning in singles were Leigha Perez, Juvy Ramirez, and Claire Garcia.

Lorenzo Perez, Miguel Morales, Bryson Catlett, Rene Alvarado, and Francisco Guerra won singles matches for the Coyotes.

Doubles winners were the teams of Gio Valdez and Lorenzo Perez, Miguel Morales and Bryson Catlett, Michael and Francisco Guerra, Kendall Zimmerman and Juvy Ramirez, Karissa Rangel and Clarissa Martinez, Elizabeth Rodriguez and Belinda Puente, and Rene Alvarado and Kayla Balbuena.
