UHS theater showcase set tomorrow

The following information was submitted by Andre Cruz, who recently portrayed George Bailey in the Janey Slaughter Briscoe Grand Opera House’s three-performance run of “It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play.”

The Uvalde High School theater department will present the second-annual, winter showcase tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the John H. Harrell Auditorium on the UHS campus.

“The showcase is a chance to get as many students involved and give them the experience of performing on stage as a preparation for University Interscholastic League theater competition in the spring,” said director Christela Mendoza, UHS theater teacher.

The showcase consists of three separate performances of five-, 10-, and 15-minute durations. The first play entitled, “Something Profound,” by Emily Hageman, is about a playwright that has an idea for a 10-minute play.

“Cell Phones of The Dead,” by Dwayne Yancey is based on the Virginia Tech shooting of 2017 from the perspective of law enforcement.

“This is such an important topic for our students and community and brings the gravity of all of those affected by a school shooting to the audience,” Mendoza stated.

Lastly, students will perform a 15-minute musical called, “21 Chump Street,” by Lin Manuel-Miranda. Manuel-Miranda is best known as writer and composer of the three-time Tony-award winning musical, “Hamilton.” The musical, based on a true story, is about an honor student who falls for a girl (an undercover cop) and obtains drugs for her in hopes of winning her affection.

“All of the performances were selected in hopes of sending relatable messages to our students to get them to think about different areas of their lives,” Mendoza explained.

Tickets are $5 and are available by contacting the UHS theater department at 830-591-2950 or at the 7 p.m. performance. Doors open at 6:20 p.m.
