UHS will host District 29-4A tennis tournament next week

Play in the two-day District 29-4A tennis tournament will begin at the Terri Rambie Tennis Complex one week from tomorrow.

District 29-4A high schools Carrizo Springs, Devine, Floresville, Pearsall, Pleasanton, Somerset, and Uvalde will compete in boys’ and girls’ singles, doubles, and mixed doubles.

Play will start at 9 a.m. on both days of the district tournament.

Coach Nolan Prichard’s Coyotes and Lobos were to host Ingram and Eagle Pass Winn in tennis action at the Rambie Complex on April 20.

Results from that tennis competition will be reported in a future edition of the Leader-News.

“Our competition against Ingram and Winn will be our last action before the district tournament,” said Coach Pritchard.

“We have had a good spring, and I think our kids are ready for district competition.”

The Uvaldeans were at Kerrville for the Tivy Invitational on April 11.

They went up against some of the top players from the hill country region.

Alicia Teague won second place in the girls’ singles A draw, while Sophia Rodriguez took second place in the girl’s Singles B Draw.

Elizabeth Phillips and Hope Dube won third place in the girls’ doubles A Draw.

Jaime Martinez and Victoria captured second place in the mixed doubles B Draw.

The Tivy tourney was initially scheduled for March 7, but because of the threat of inclement weather conditions, it was postponed and then rescheduled for April 11.

The Uvaldeans recently participated in the Uvalde High School Pre-District tournament on April 5-6.

They faced top high school players from Bandera, Del Rio, Dilley, Eagle Pass, Hondo, Pearsall, Pleasanton, Laredo Nixon, Corpus Christi Ray, Sabinal, San Antonio O’Connor, and Uvalde Classical Academy.

Elizabeth Phillips and Hope Dube captured first-place honors in the girls’ doubles competition.

Allison Goggans and Marquez Lopez teamed up to win first place in mixed doubles. Alicia Teague won runner-up honors in girls’ singles action.

Nick Avila and Roman Partida claimed the consolation title in boys’ doubles.
