UHS wins district championship


Uvalde High School nailed down its seventh consecutive district tennis team title Wednesday.

The Uvaldeans whipped the Eagle Pass Winn Mavericks, 18-1, in a dual-team match at the Terri Rambie Tennis Complex to make it a clean sweep against District 28-5A opponents.

With the win, UHS head tennis coach Terri Rambie’s Coyotes and Lobos completed district play with a perfect 7-0 record.

They improved their season team record to 15-5.

“Team is what it is all about. It takes a whole team to win and not just one person,” said Coach Rambie. “These kids have shown commitment, effort, pride, and discipline. That is why they are district champs.

Next action for the Uvaldeans will come later this month at the bi-distrct tournament. The date, time, and location for the bi-district event has yet to be finalized.

“Coach Eric Mahler and myself are pleased with what these kids have accomplished this season. We look forward to bi-district play,” said Rambie.

The Coyotes won all six singles matches and all three doubles matches played against Winn Wednesday.

Beau Gonzalez whipped Miguel Castillon, 6-1 and 6-1, in the singles number-one match.

Andrew Melchor rolled past Alex Jimenez, 6-1 and 6-1, in the number-two match, while Lorenzo Perez defeated Luis Diaz, 6-0 and 6-4, in the number-three match.

Giovanni Valdez beat George Gaytan, 6-2 and 6-2, in the number-four match, Ricardo Moreno rolled over Zair Mota, 6-1 and 6-0, in the number-five match, and Colton Gaston smashed Robert Rodriguez, 6-0 and 6-1, in the number-six match.

In the number-one doubles match, Beau Gonzalez and Andrew Melchor shut out Miguel Castillon and Alex Jimenez, 6-0 and 6-0.

Lorenzo Perez and Riley Dalrymple downed George Gaytan and Luis Diaz, 6-2 and 7-6, in the number-two match.

Ricardo Moreno and Juan Melchor combined to beat Zair Mota and Robert Rodriguez, 6-4 and 6-4, in the number-three match.

The Lobos won all three girls’ doubles matches, while they were victorious in five of their six singles matches.

Bailey Wimberley and Bailey Towne outlasted Aaliyah Hurtado and Angell Gaytan, 7-5 and 7-5, in the number-one match.

Brenda Garcia and Gaby Rodriguez topped Emily Hernandez and Paulina De La Fuente, 6-2 and 6-2, in the number-two match, while Rylee Dodson and Arlin Moreno bested Angie Flores and Andrea Casas, 6-3 and 6-2, in the number-three match.

Bailey Towne posted a 6-1 and 6-1 win over Angell Gaytan in the number-two singles match.

Daniela Rodriguez beat Emily Hernandez, 6-1 and 6-0, in the number-threematch, while Gaby Rodriguez pounded out a 6-1 and 6-1 win over Angie Flores in the number-four match.

Brenda Garcia won over Paulina De La Fuente, 7-5 and 6-2, in the number-five match and Rylee Dodson won the number-six match, 6-1 and 6-3, over Andrea Casas.

In mixed doubles, Giovanni Valdez and Daniela Rodriguez blanked Raul Zendejas and Arianne Balderas, 6-0 and 6-0.

UHS won several extra matches against Winn.

Singles winners were Juan Melchor, Kezia Rodriguez, Michael Guerra, Juan Lopez, Rene Garcia, and Ashley Garcia.

In doubles, winners were the teams of Michael Guerra and Zac Arizmendi, Francisco Guerra and Rene Garcia, Juvy Ramirez and Ashley Garcia, and Crystal Mason and Mattie Elder.

Besides Winn, UHS recorded district victories over Southwest Legacy, Southwest High, Floresville, Medina Valley, Somerset, and Harlan to captured the District 28-5A team-tennis title.
