UPD distributing free gun locks

The Uvalde Police Department, in partnership with Project ChildSafe, is offering free gun locks to area citizens in an effort to promote gun safety.

UPD public information officer Jessica Zamora said gun safety is a top priority in the nation and, with more school-aged children staying home during the pandemic, it is vital to continue to ensure their safety with safe storage of firearms in the home.

“Project ChildSafe allows for law enforcement to distribute free gun locks to help ensure the safety of children in our community,” Zamora said, noting they also offer tips through McGruff the Crime Dog.

By partnering with the program to provide an initial 500 free locks, UPD hopes to help prevent firearm accidents, gun theft, and misuse by helping owners store firearms responsibly.

UPD offers the following safety tips for those who store firearms in the home to help prevent firearm access by unauthorized individuals:

Keep guns unloaded, and store them locked, in a safe or with a gun lock; store ammunition in a separate, preferably locked, place; teach children and teenagers to never touch a firearm unsupervised, and to tell an adult if they see one; and never let children or teens know where the keys to unlock weapons or ammunition are located.

Free gun locks and safety brochures may be obtained at the Uvalde Police Department, 964 W. Main St., or at Oasis Outback, 2900 E. Main St.
