Utopia High School students continue to make our community proud as the ladies golf team recently won the championship for class A schools in our region at the tournament held in Manor.

This big win qualifies the team to vie for the state championship at the Plum Creek course in Kyle on May 6-7.

Kinsley Cox led the team with the top medalist award. Other members of the team include Danika McCarty, Riley McCutcheon, Lizzy Hryniszak and Hallie Moore.

Jaci McCarty is the golf coach for our school.

The district tennis tournament was the last of the district meets and Utopia High School players brought the district championship home after two days of play.

Luke and Lawson Leavelle won first in boys’ doubles while Kinsley Cox and Meagan Cole will get another chance to win the state title after their first-place finish.

Hallie Moore is headed to the regional tournament as girls’ singles winner. Congratulations to all the tennis players and coach Stacey Keeney for an impressive showing at district. They will meet the regional qualifiers in Bryan on May 8-9 for a chance to go to state.

Ice Cream winners

The Lions Club led a fun night of ice cream sampling and toe-tapping to the music of the Caliche Hill Band on April 20. Many delicious and fancy recipes met the taste buds of all the guests who chose Lynne Mumme’s banana pudding cream as the best.

Roxy Vasques made a peach cobbler cheesecake that the crowd voted second best, and Mike Canion’s chocolate almond came in third.

The generous folks in attendance donated $1,000 to the Lion Club’s projects and scholarships.

FFA happenings

Several members of the Utopia FFA attended the Revaldina District FFA meeting and banquet. Chloe Matocha was elected district reporter and also placed first in the talent contest with an impressive piano solo.

She will now compete in the area FFA talent contest. Congratulations to Chloe for this honor and good luck in the next contest. FFA Advisor Megan Fullen accompanied the group. Fullen and the FFA students have worked hard this school year to grow our FFA and increase the enrichment that accompanies a strong program.

Around Town

Rip and Elvie Duke invite all their friends to join them in celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on May 4 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Senior Center. The Dukes were high school sweethearts and married just before Elvie’s graduation from Utopia High School, class of 1964. Maybe all her classmates should show up for the party and we will just celebrate our class reunion at the same time, thus saving on party planning.

May 4 is a very busy day in Utopia with the county team-roping qualifying event in the park along with the Crawfish Boil benefitting the Utopia-Vanderpool Youth Complex at noon.

The Jones Cemetery clean-up happens early on May 4 so everyone can work a couple hours and then head to all the other fun activities around town.

The dedication of the new Town Square, actually named San Jacinto Square by Robert and Sarah Kinchloe, donors of the land when the town was platted in 1884, was well attended and everyone was thankful for the nice rain the previous night that watered all the new plantings. A big heartfelt thanks to Debra Westmoreland for her vision and willingness to step out in faith to get it accomplished. Many Utopians and other donors who have never even been to Utopia generously funded the project through actual cash or donated labor. This resulted in a very attractive and welcoming space in the heart of our town that can be enjoyed for many years by locals and visitors to our community.
