Uvalde residents, Border Patrol agent die in crash

Uvalde residents Ruby Garza and Julia Vasquez, and off-duty U.S. Border Patrol agent Antonio Cordova of the Uvalde Station, were killed Christmas night following a head-on collision on Farm-to-Market Road 481.

The wreck occurred at 11:50 p.m., 25 miles southwest of Uvalde. Farm-to-Market Road 481 is often called Old Eagle Pass Road.

The Texas Department of Public Safety’s preliminary investigation shows that Garza, driving a Ford Expedition, struck a wild hog on the roadway. The collision caused her to enter the southbound lane of travel and strike a 2011 Mercedes SUV head-on.

Cordova, a 27-year-old off-duty USBP agent, was the driver and sole occupant of the Mercedes SUV.

Garza, 51, was traveling with three passengers: Julia Vasquez, also 51, and Mayra Vasquez and Naomi Acuna.

Both vehicles were fully engulfed in flames.

Garza and Cordova were pronounced dead at the scene. Julia Vasquez was pronounced dead at Uvalde Memorial Hospital.

Mayra Vasquez and Naomi Acuna were taken to San Antonio hospitals, but their conditions are not yet known.
