Vaughan is state champ, nationals bound

 Uvalde High School junior Ava Vaughan is going to the Business Professionals of America national competition, after besting at least 70 competitors in the fundamental spreadsheet category and winning the state champion title.

The national competition is set for April 25-30 in California.

 The state meet was held March 2-5 in Dallas, where Vaughan was joined by six other members of the UHS Business Professionals of America team. There were over 3,926 registered attendees at the state contest.

Vaughan is also the regional champion in fundamental spreadsheets. The regional contest was held Jan. 14 at Medina Valley High School.

“We are proud of all the students and how they performed at their event,” said BPA coach Roy Torres.

Members of the Uvalde High School BPA team who competed at state include senior Ryder Torres, a four time state qualifier in advanced word processing, placing 13th; junior Elizabeth Phillips, first time state qualifier fundamental spreadsheets, placing 12th; and Ty Gonzalez, regional champion and first time state qualifier, banking and finance, 15th place. 

Also, senior Reagan Dodson, first time state qualifier, health administration procedures, 28th place; and senior Payton Dodson, three time state qualifier, business law and ethics, 24th place; and Jack Brock, first time competing, open events.

Business Professionals of America is the nation’s leading Career and Technical Student Organization for students pursuing careers in business management, information technology, finance, office administration, health administration and other related career fields, per its website. The organization has over 1,800 chapters across 25 states.
