The following information was submitted by Shirley Grigg of the Green Thumb Garden Club of Uvalde.
The Green Thumb Garden Club of Uvalde chose Helen Windham’s 921 Maple St. home and Dr. Anupama Thapar’s Uvalde Smiles dental office at 116 N. Fifth St. as the yards of the month for October.
Windham has a well-groomed lawn, stately oak trees, and flower beds surrounding the perimeter of her home. A hanging basket filled with Boston fern, and a palm plant and pothos ivy adorn the front porch. The beds contain Japanese boxwood, English Ivy, Knock Out roses, canna lily, Aztec grass, vinca, lariope, impatiens, kalanchoe, portulaca, firecracker plant, cast-iron plant, mandevilla and bougainvillea.
The backyard is shaded by a majestic oak tree and framed by beds of an array of plants, plus a few potted plants. There is creeping blue phlox, Mexican grass, sweetheart gardenia, star jasmine, butterfly bush, lantana, plumbago, pride of Barbados, Esperanza, foxtail fern, and sagos.
The dental office features a row of crepe myrtles along the fence line, providing a backdrop for the xeriscaped yard covered with gravel.
Large boulders and driftwood are scattered among the variety of dry climate cacti. A tall double palm draws the eye up in contrast to the smaller cacti purchased from numerous nurseries throughout Texas.
