Leon D. Walton

Leon Douglas Walton, 86, of Uvalde died on April 9, 2014, at Uvalde Memorial Hospital. He was born on Sept. 22, 1927, in Abilene to Annie Brashier Walton and Rector Walton. His family moved to Del Rio, when he was 2 years old. Walton grew up there and graduated from Del Rio High School in 1945. Walton then attended Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, and graduated in 1949. He coached and taught science for four years. He married Lylian Ballenger in Council Bluffs, Iowa on Dec. 24, 1950. They moved to their farm on Hacienda Road in 1952 and stayed there the rest of their lives. She preceded him in death in 1984. Walton was a deacon at First Baptist Church in Uvalde. He is survived by one son-in-law, Jeff Kurtz and wife, Linda, of Plano; two grandsons, Jonathan Kurtz and Stephen Kurtz; two nephews, Jack Walton and Richard “Dick” Walton; two great-nephews, Richard Walton and Brad Walton; and one great-niece, Kristin Walton. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one daughter, Susan Kurtz; and one brother, Rector Walton Jr. Funeral services were held yesterday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Homer Hanna officiating. He was also assisted by Rev. Lonnie Moore and Rev. Jim Jackson. Interment followed in Hillcrest Cemetery. Pallbearers were R.B. “Bob” Willoughby Jr., Art Sutton, Robert “Bob” Zaiglin, Bill McWhorter, Bill Holloway and Tim Reed. Honorary pallbearers were Todo Myane and Ed O’Neal.
