Fred ‘Gene’ Proft

Fred E. “Gene” Proft, 85, died on April 12, 2014, at the Kerrville VA Hospice Program. He was born July 1, 1928, in Port Arthur and has resided in Leakey since 1995. Visitation will be held Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall of St. Raymond Church in Leakey, with a Mass of Christian burial to follow at 11 a.m. celebrated by the Rev. Jose Villanueva and Deacon Ruben Navarro. Proft worked for Texaco, Inc.’s Marine Department in Port Arthur for 38 years. From 1951-1952, he served in Korea with the U.S. Army 1st Field Artillery Observation Battalion (Tenth Corp). As a SFC, he earned a Bronze Star medal for valor. The family said Proft loved and supported his family and friends. He thoroughly enjoyed retirement, especially playing guitar and singing in church or with friends. He loved travel, history, hiking, music, jamming with his musician friends, making people laugh, entertainment, Leakey and the Texas Hill Country, serving his Lord, and volunteering at his place of worship. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Gwen Pellegrin Owen Proft; two daughters, Pam Proft Swendig and husband, John, of Garland and Stephanie Proft Dumesnil of Garland; one son, Eddy Gene Proft and husband, Varunee “Dang,” of Grants Pass, Ore.; six grandchildren; and two brothers, Frank Proft and wife, Mary Ann, of Port Arthur and Paul Proft and wife, Joan, of San Antonio. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 40 years, Kathryn “Katy” Homan Proft; parents, Emma Katherine Miller Proft and Conrad Proft. Sr.; and two brothers, Conrad Proft Jr. and Robert “Bob” Proft.
