Emergency helicopter ride for $6?

PHI Air Medical on Tuesday asked council members to consider enrolling all city residents in a membership program that will pay for all out-of-pocket expenses (those not covered by insurance) that arise from medical air transport.

The program would cost $6 per household, per year. All members of the household would be covered. According to the city of Uvalde, there are 4,589 households with 16,476 residents, bringing the total cost to $27,534 per year.

According to city manager Vince DiPiazza, the fee could be funded from a general fund allocation in the budget or by charging residential utility customers .50 per month. The fee would be reflected on monthly utility bills.
