Coyotes face tough slate at Tivy tourney next weekend


The Uvalde Coyotes will be at Kerrville next weekend for competition in the Tivy Invitational basketball tournament.

They will open play in the tournament with a Friday 9:30 a.m. matchup against the tourney-host Tivy Antlers.

Tivy is a pre-season pick to finish third in this season’s District 26-5A race.

At 12:30 p.m. Friday, the Uvaldeans will take on the TMI Episcopal Panthers.

On Saturday, the Coyotes will take on the Buda Hays Rebels in a 9:30 a.m. contest.

They will wind up tourney competition with a 12:30 a.m. contest against the Austin Lake Travis Cavaliers.

Lake Travis is a pre-season pick to win the District 25-6A basketball title.

Other teams entered in the Tivy tournament next weekend include Alamo Heights and Jubilee.

Coach Alex Oyola’s Coyotes will enter Tivy tournament competition following a matchup against the Lytle Pirates.

Uvalde was to play Lytle Friday night.

Results from the Uvalde High School season home opener in Harvey Kinchlow Gym will be reported in Thursday’s edition of the Uvalde Leader-News.

Coach Oyola named members of his varsity team following tryouts held last week.

Those on the 2018 UHS varsity basketball roster include Peyton Carnes, Jose Luevanos, Cristian Treviño, Jose Ruiz, Donovan Amaya, Raul Flores, Chris Embers, Jose Gonzalez, Jackson Taylor, Majik De La Garza, Sotero Martinez Jr., Emmanuel Gonzales and D’Andre Carroll.

Following the Tivy tournament, the Coyotes will resume their schedule on Nov. 27 when they host the Fredericksburg Battlin’ Billies in Kinchlow Gym.

The varsity game is set to start at 6:30 p.m., while the two sub-varsity games will get under way at 5 p.m.

UHS’s three teams will be involved in different tournaments set for Nov. 29 through Dec. 1.

The varsity Coyotes will vie in the Hondo tournament, the junior varsity Coyotes will play in the Devine tournament, while the UHS freshmen will take part in the Somerset tournament.

On Dec. 5, the Uvaldeans will be on the road to play the Bandera Bulldogs

The varsity Coyotes will compete in the Los Fresnos tournament scheduled for Dec. 6-8, while the UHS freshmen will play in the Eagle Pass tournament set for Dec. 7-8.

District 14-5A Division II competition for the Coyotes will begin on Dec. 11 when the Uvaldeans host the Medina Valley Panthers in Kinchlow Gym.

The Medina Valley game will kick off a series of 16 district basketball games that will conclude on Feb. 8 when the Coyotes host the Southside Cardinals in Kinchlow Gym.

Southside, Southwest, Floresville and Somerset are pre-season picks to claim the top four playoff spots, according to a pre-season ranking made by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.

San Antonio Sam Houston and San Antonio Harlandale are ranked among the TABC’s pre-season Top 25 list of Class 5A boys’ basketball teams.

The Justin Northwest Texans are ranked number-one in the state in Class 5A by the TABC.

Justin is a suburban community located north of Fort Worth.

Assisting Coach Oyola with the UHS basketball program this season are Coach Mychal Sanchez and Coach George Menchaca.
